Romania’s grain production amounted to almost 27 million tons in 2017, exceeding 1.4 tons per capita, agriculture minister Petre Daea said on Friday last week.
The country saw nine historic records for the production of wheat, rapeseed, peas, barley, sunflower, soy, corn, potatoes and grapes.
Romania ranks first in the EU for the cultivated area with sunflower and corn, the minister added. It also ranks first for the production of sunflower seeds.
The wheat yield exceeded 10 million tons per hectare in 2017 whereas the corn yield surpassed 14.5 million tons per hectare. In the last 10 years, the area cultivated with corn was between 2.3 and 2.7 million hectares, with only one year – 2010 – in which the area did not exceed 2.1 million hectares at national level.
In 2016, Romania was the largest sunflower seed producer and fifth-biggest wheat producer in the European Union.
