Romania: Coal production decreases 10.2pct in first 11 months of 2016, imports decrease 1.3pct

Coal net production in Romania totalled in the first 11 months of last year 3.813 million tons of oil equivalent (toe), 10.2pct (435.400 toe) lower when compared to the same period in 2015, according to the centralized data of the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In the mentioned period, Romania imported 495,000 toe net coal, 6,500 toe (1.3pct) less compared to the imported quantity in the same period of the last year.

According to the Energy Strategy project, published on the website of relevant Ministry, Romania has at its disposal 12.6 billion tons lignite total reserves, geographically concentrated in the Oltenia Mining Area. The deposits in exploitation account for 986 million tons.

The reserves of pit coal, concentrated in the coalfield of Valea Jiului, stand at 2.2 billion tones, from which 592 million tons are found in the exploitation areas.
