Romania: Former PM, Dacian Ciolos, warns about the Government’s populist talks over economy

Former premier Dacian Ciolos reacted on Tuesday at the statements made by PSD president Liviu Dragnea. The latter said that the 3% budget deficit was exceeded because of populist measures adopted last year by Parliament.

“I see that someone who has today all levers of power and their responsibility, asked me to explain to Mr Juncker about Romania’s budget deficit of 2017. I have nothing to explain to Mr Juncker,” Ciolos wrote on Facebook.

He points out that he has already explained why the deficit was exceeded by populist measures adopted in Parliament last year.

“The real problem is that Mr Dragnea’s impossibility to explain economic phenomena, despite expense decisions announced in a triumphant way, will be translated by losses which will be seen in the Romanians’ pockets. Because there is a major risk that what we give with one hand will have to be taken back later with two hands, due to irresponsibility,” Ciolos added.

The 3-percent government deficit won’t be exceeded, Speaker of the Deputies’ Chamber Liviu Dragnea said Tuesday, mentioning that the signals in this regard gave by the European Commission are “profoundly incorrect.”
