Romania: Victor Ponta and Dan Sova, acquitted in the Turceni-Rovinari trial

The High Court of Cassation and Justice decided Thursday to acquit Victor Ponta and Dan Sova in the Turceni-Rovinari trial. The decision is not final and can be attacked by the DNA.

Laurentiu Ciurel, General Manager of SC Rovinari Energy Complex (CER) at the material time, and Laurentiu Graure, at that time Economic Director of the CET, were also acquitted in the same file. The two were accused of abuse of office.

Another defendant, Dumitru Cristea, at the time of the facts, General Director of the Turceni Energy Complex (CET), was sentenced to 4 years in prison.

Former Prime Minister Victor Ponta, was accused of forgery, complicity in tax evasion and money laundering. Former Minister Dan Sova was accused of complicity in office abuse, forgery of private documents, tax evasion and money laundering.
